Next week Reedsburg Public Library’s Cookbook Club meets to talk about seasonal apple recipes, and the Friends of the Reedsburg Library prepare for their upcoming book sale. As a reminder the Library will be closed Saturday, Sept. 5, through Monday, Sept. 7, for the Labor Day holiday.
On Wednesday, Sept. 2, RPL’s cookbook club will meet at 6 p.m. to talk about cooking and baking with apples.
According to Cookbook Club Facilitator Heidi Feller, “While most of us view apples as a dessert item, they are actually quite versatile.”
Apples can be used in many salads, and Feller’s current favorite is one that employs radicchio, Parmesan cheese and cubed apples. For many recipes, Granny Smith apples are recommended because they impart excellent flavor but also hold their shape. Several apple cookbooks are available for checkout at the library, if you would like to join the group’s next meeting. Register for the program on the library’s website, or call the Reedsburg Public Library.
The Friends of the Reedsburg Public Library annual fall book sale begins next Thursday, Sept. 10, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 13. Books and other materials on offer include volumes withdrawn from the library collection due to age, wear, or lack of relevance, as well as generous book donations from library customers. Books and other materials are not marked with a price, but can be purchased with a voluntary donation to the Friends group. Proceeds from the thrice yearly Friends Book Sale fund those little extras that the regular library budget may not cover, including special additions to collections and programming, library furnishings, and office equipment for both staff and the public.
The Friends could use your help in monitoring the book sale, and in setting up and taking down the book displays in the Community Room. You don’t need to be an official “Friend” to volunteer. If you are interested in helping during library open hours anytime from Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Monday, Sept. 14, contact Assistant Library Director Anne Howe, at 608-768-7323.
If you are interested in donating books to the book sale, the Friends will be taking donations on Tuesday, Sept. 8, and Wednesday, Sept. 9, during library open hours. Books and other materials need to be clean and in good condition. Unfortunately, we cannot accept encyclopedia sets, textbooks, National geographic magazines or VHS tapes.
Remember that September is Library Card Sign Up Month. Adults can obtain a library card for themselves and their children by presenting a photo ID with a current address and filling out a brief application. Checkout is available the same day. If the address on your identification has changed, simply bring in a bill or other piece of mail to prove your current address. Area educators may also register for a “Teacher card” to keep their classroom materials separate from their personal ones.
For questions about any library program or service, call the library at 608-768-READ (7323) or email info@reedsburglibrary.org.
