Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) Review
With a title as hectic and crazy as Birds of Prey, does the film reflect this zaniness and insanity? Yes. The answer is yes, and then some. This film is just as bonkers as the title suggests.
Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is the latest superhero flick in the DC Universe. Following the character of Harley Quinn, an insane criminal gymnast and girlfriend of the iconic villain the Joker, this film picks up a few years after the events of 2016’s Suicide Squad. Here we find Quinn has finally broken up with the dastardly clown and is looking to carve her own path through Gotham City. But when the other criminals in Gotham find out that she no longer has Joker’s protection, they all set their sights on taking her out once and for all.
I thoroughly enjoyed Birds of Prey. It was a very fun and colorful experience that left me wanting to see more from its multitude of unique and interesting characters. And that’s what I think is the big standout from this film. The characters.
Margot Robbie plays Harley Quinn and all of her insanity tremendously well. While unsure about her work as the character in her debut appearance in Suicide Squad, this film completely swayed me to loving her performance. While on the surface very comedic and one-note, Robbie reveals a lot of personal detail in the character and does a lot to cement this as a great performance.
The ensemble is also incredibly delightful. Throughout the movie, Quinn crosses paths with quite a few other skilled and dangerous women. Dinah Lance (a singer and chauffeur to one of the biggest criminals in Gotham City), Renee Montoya (an experienced cop who has had case after case taken credit for by her boss), and the Crossbow Killer (a mysterious assassin that pops up now and again wielding a deadly crossbow). All of these characters were incredibly unique and fun to watch. Their interactions especially were some of the most memorable points in the film.
The other big standout element from the film is the incredible action. Something I was not expecting from this movie was the great action. None of the fights are shot in a shaky camera movement such as most recent action movies. Instead, the camera is clear and steady, allowing you to really understand what is going on in front of you. The action is also really creative and fun. A shootout in the police station is particularly one I will remember for quite some time. Let’s just say there was a lot of glitter, laughs, and maybe even a diamond.
Birds of Prey is definitely a blast. I had a boatload of fun watching this movie and while it never really tries to do anything too deep or intricate, not every movie has to do that.
