Soccer Vanguards split two

The Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld boys soccer slipped to fourth place in the 10-team Capitol Conference with a loss to Lake Mills and a win over Lakeside Lutheran last week. The Vanguards are now 3-2 in the conference. The Vanguards fell to Lake Mills, 3-2, on Sept. 24, in a game played at Breese Stevens Field. With Heights/Barneveld trailing, 1-0, Vanguards’ leading scorer Gavin Childs tied the game in the 24th minute. Four minutes later, Heights/Barneveld was awarded a corner kick. In the chaos in front of the net, Caeben Schomber punched it in for a 2-1 Vanguards’ lead. But Lake Mills scored two more goals and pulled out a 3-2 win. “We really appreciate the opportunity to play at Breese Stevens, even though the game didn’t go our way,” Vanguards coach Bartlett Holmes said. “We have some issues that we need to work on. We let the game slip away by not staying on our marks and not winning the 50/50 balls.” Thursday, Heights/Barneveld bounced back with a 5-0 victory over Lakeside Lutheran. An early hand ball in the box allowed junior Caeben Schomber to convert a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead. Childs followed up with a dribbler on the edge of the net to put Heights/Barneveld up 2-0. Trevor Dimpfl’s save late in the first half led to a punt which Childs punched in for a 3-0 lead at half. Lakeside’s opportunity came when a foul was committed just outside the box and it was awarded a free kick. Junior defender AJ Olson leaped in the air for a header that cleared the ball up field. At 78 minutes, Schomber and Childs combined for another score. Schomber took a corner kick and Childs found the back of the net. Just before the final whistle, Schomber took another corner kick and sophomore Michael Johnson headed the ball in for a 5-0 final. “We got the W,” Holmes said. “But we are still struggling with the same issues. The Vanguards’ girls were sixth out of six teams. Places were determined by adding the times from the top five runners. On the boys’ side, Vanguards standout Christian Patzka was first in 16:28.5. Zachary Bauman was 23rd (18:24.8), Weston Parman was 26th (18:30.1), Andrew Pietrzykowski was 56th (20:22.0) and Seth Sullivan was 67th (20:46.6). The Vanguards’ combined time was 94:32.0. Champion New Glarus/Monticello finished in 89:48.9. On the girls’ side, Heights/Barneveld freshman Samantha Herrling won the girls race in 19:00.6. Kassidy Frame was 32nd (22:41.1), Greine Simemrt was 50th (24:04.1), Brianna Herrling was 52nd (24:17.6) and Emma Gordon was 73rd (27:49.0). The Vanguards finished with a total time of 117:53.2, well behind champion Lake Mills (110:42.6).
